Step 1: Obtain an account on

Register for an account on if you do not already have one.  After registering and submitting payment (if you selected a paid plan), you should receive 2 emails.  The first one contains a link to activate your account, and the second contains your 5-digit counter generation code (CGC).  Click the activation link in the first email, and write down your counter generation code from the second email.

Step 2: Download and install the DokuTracker for Office Toolbar.

Download the DokuTracker Toolbar for MS Office.  Install the application as you would install any other program.

IMPORTANT: You must have a version of Microsoft Office installed.

Step 3: Configure DokuTracker Toolbar.

Launch Microsoft Word and go to the Add-Ins toolbar.  Click on the Gears to open the configuration options.

Using an older version of Microsoft Word (2003, XP, 2000, or 97)?  Click here for an alternative guide.

Enter your credentials in the fields provided.  Your username is the account name you use to sign into our website.  The Counter Generation Code is the code you received in your email.  You may also find it at the top of the Your Trackers page.

Step 4: Track a Document

Click on the Eyeball to start tracking this document, then save the document.  Name the tracking bug something specific and include the recipient's name.  For example, if you are tracking a resume that you are sending to Apple, call the tracker Resume - Apple.

Important: If you receive an error message such as Invalid CGC or Invalid Username, please check this page for a solution.

Step 5: Go to "Your Trackers" page

Log into your account and go to the Your Trackers page.  Your tracker should appear with the number of hits it has received so far.  You can click on the magnifying glass to show specific users that have opened your document (via their town and IP address).  If you'd like to verify this is working, send the document to a friend and ask them to open it.  You should see a hit from them appear.

Step 6: You're Done!

Repeat this process for each of the documents you wish to track, keeping in mind to use unique names for each tracker.  For example, if you are sending your resume to Apple and Microsoft, here's what you'd do:

  1. Open your resume
  2. Click on the eyeball to "Track this document"
  3. Name the tracker "Resume - Apple"
  4. Save the document and send it to Apple.
  5. Re-open your resume
  6. Click on the eyeball to "Track this document"
  7. Name the tracker "Resume - Microsoft"
  8. Save the document and send it to Microsoft.
  9. Repeat steps 5-8, replacing "Microsoft" with whatever employer you wish to send your resume to.
