General Questions:

What is DokuTracker?

DokuTracker is a program that can track when documents are opened on remote machines.

How much does it cost?

Please see our pricing page for current pricing information.

How does it work?

DokuTracker works by embedding a tracking component into Microsoft Word documents.  Whenever the document is opened, the component makes a request to our website and records the date/time of the request was made, the requester's IP address and location, and your username to link it to your account.

There is no executable code or macros, so it is not possible to harm the person opening the document.

Is it safe?

Yes.  No macros or executable code is placed in the word document.  It is a benign component, and uses tactics similar to the ones employed by many email marketers.

Is it detectable by Anti-virus software?

No. We haven't found one yet that does and its extremely unlikely that one ever will.  Because the component appears to be normal web traffic, it will almost certainly be left untouched by hardware firewalls.  In the extremely rare case that a firewall does block it, there would be no indication that anything was wrong or abnormal with your resume.  It would still look the same (you just wouldn't be notified).

Are there any conditions when DokuTracker will not work?

Yes. The person opening the document must have an active internet connection to ping our website. If they do not have an internet connection, the document will still open correctly but you will not be notified.

What kind of documents can be tracked? / Can I track PDFs?

You can save your Word document in the following formats:

  • .doc + .docx (Word)
  • .rtf (Rich-Text Format)
  • .html
  • .odt (Open Office Text Document)
  • .pdf (PDF)*
*In order to save to PDF, you will need to install the free "Save as PDF" plug-in from Microsoft. This plug-in is only available for Microsoft Office 2007 and later.

Account Questions:

Where can I find my Counter Generation Code (CGC)?

To access 'Your Trackers', log in to your account, then click on View Stats on the main menu.  Your CGC will be listed at the top of the page, in the Your Settings section.  Enter this code into the DokuTracker options (click the gears icon on the toolbar).
